Senior Project #3

I have been working on my senior project that is the language development of babies and toddlers. The day before I went to first start my volunteer hours I went and took my mentor the slip of paper that said I had taken my TB test and that it had come out negative. I have gone to do my hours at the pre-school and while I am there the kids have me read books to them. On Wednesday that was my first day it was scary for me to go and be around kids I did not know. I think it was also kind of scary for the kids because at the beginning they just looked at me like if I was a stranger. After like 10 minutes I felt like they warmed up to me because a little boy asked me if I wanted to play with him and then after just a few moments later many kids went up to me so I could read them book and so I did my mentor who is the pre -school teacher told me that they looked like they warmed up to me because we did a little circle time for me to read to them while it was their play time. Since it was a rainy day they were also not able to go outside and play in the little playground.
I also went on Friday so I could do more of my volunteer hours and also that day was a rainy day and they did mostly the same thing except that there was a substitute teacher. They also did many other activities some kids painted, did collages, or played on the carpet with the many toys that are there at the pre-school and others went to the dress up area and became construction workers, firemen or policemen. I really enjoy going to work with the kids because you seem to see things differently after interacting with them. That day I also read to them because they went up to me with many books. I enjoyed reading to them the many books that they have. I am looking forward to the next day I get to go to do more of my volunteer hours.

Progress Report on A Child Called "It"

My book is really interesting and sad at the same time. At the beginning the little boy has like a perfect life. His father a firefighter worked for many hours at times he did 24-hour shifts and his mother was a stay at home mom and he had two other brothers. They would always take family trips and vacations and they would have a great time. David’s mother would always have the house clean and would always cook good food. After a while David’s mother started to change she stopped cleaning the house stopped cooking and only got ready and tried to look good while her husband was around it only lasted for a while because after she stopped caring and then did not get ready at all. David’s mother started to blame him for any little thing even if he had nothing to do with it and also if he would be playing with his brothers he would be the only one to get in trouble and would be punished. Then David was the only one who got physically and mentally abused by his mother he was like an outcast of the family because his other brothers would not get the same treatment from their mother. His mother started to give less and less privileges to David he was punished for things he never did and he would also get in trouble when his mother would tell him to look for an item he would ask what item but she would get mad and David just kept searching for the unknown item hoping to find it. Also his mother had dramatic changes like wanting to harm David in many ways at one time David’s mother told him to  get on top of the stove which was turned on and had the burning flame. His arm was burn but he was lucky because he did not have to get on top of the stove. His mother would also beat him a lot and at school they would record his bruises it was like an everyday thing that the school nurse would check him and every time he would have an excuse to tell the nurse but the nurse also kept records of David’s excuses he would give and those excuses were mad up by David’s mother. David wants to be fed but since his mother deprives him of food and so he tries to find many ways of how to get some food into his system he has already stole food from his classmates lunch boxes and got caught so then he went to steal food from another class’s lunchboxes but also got caught. So he planned he would go to the grocery store near his school and steal some food it worked but he hid the box of crackers in the trash can of the boys bathroom and the custodian emptied out the trash before he was able to eat any. At home he would also try to get scraps of food from the trash can but his mother found out o she started pouring ammonia into the trashcan and then he was not even able to feed himself by getting the food that was thrown away.

Senior Project Progress #2

For my senior project I have already finished my mentor interview questions. I have interviewed my mentor had her fill out the mentor contract and turned all that in on time to my government teacher. During the time I met with my mentor I scheduled with her at the time she thought was convenient for me to go and volunteer there. I have not finished scheduling my hours with her because she needs to see what hours are convenient for her and what hours are convenient for me I had told her I can do more of my hours on short days which are on Wednesdays and also on Friday’s.
I am also considering on going to child start and seeing if I am also able to volunteer there and get more hours done because I have a feeling I will only be able to do just my 20 hours with my mentor at the pre-school. I also want to see the different atmospheres that there is between a pre-school and a child start program and I would  be going there and checking up with a lady from there because I had gone before and they had said that I would be able to go and volunteer there. So I am going to go again and double check with them after I have token my tuberculosis test.  I have my appointment for my tuberculosis test on Monday and then I will have to go two days later to have the tuberculosis test read and I also have an appointment scheduled for the reading of the tuberculosis test.
I have started thinking of what I am going to include in my senior project paper because I know it has to be five to six pages long and what I am going to talk about in m y essay is how babies and toddlers develop their language skills.  I also hope to include why it is so important for babies and toddlers to develop their language skills early in life and I am also planning on including how babies and toddlers without being able to speak are able to communicate with their elders and are able to get their point across. I have gone to the Napa county library and put books on hold because they were not available at the time but I was able to get my hands on 2 books on the language development skills of babies and I am hoping they will b helpful. I was also talking to the librarian there and she found my topic very interesting and she offered to help me with what I needed and I was very grateful. I am hoping I am able to get my books before thanksgiving break so I can start to read them and hopefully start typing my essay.

Letter to Riffkin

Dear Rifkin,
The article in the Los Angeles times “A Change of Heart About Animals” that you published on September 1, 2003. I have read and I agree with you that our fellow creatures are more like us than we ever imagined. I believe this because I love animals and I think that every animal has feelings because they have a brain which is linked to their emotions. Also everyone that has a brain and a heart fell some kind of emotions weather it may be that they feel happy, sad, mad or any other emotion. Yes in nature most animals do not have feelings towards their fellow animals and yes I understand that because they have to survive by killing them and also by feeding off of them. Then again we are in civilization and we should feel more empathy towards them seeming that we have taken them out of their natural habitat and placed them in exhibits, zoos and other places like that where they can and should provide them food and not let them feed off of other animals that have died. Also our fellow creatures do not lack self-individualism like how you said in your article that at the Washington national zoo an orangutan was given a mirror and the orangutan explored it body parts and that helps them see how unique they are compared to other orangutans.  Also as how you mentioned in your article that many believe that animals do not know how to mourn or that we believe that they cannot comprehend that concept. Well as you also mentioned that elephants do know how to mourn because at times they will often stand next to their other relatives for days and occasionally touching the remains of their loved ones.
Many people do not appreciate their animals and treat them badly but others treat their animals with a lot of respect and always care for them.  There should be a few changes in how people should treat their animals because others are able to have animals but there is always the fact that people have them but don’t take care for them. Also many people seem to label the animals for what just one animal did and not all animals are the same for example pit bulls as killers and dangerous dogs in the eyes of some people. It all depends on how an animal was raised and was trained by their owner if the owner taught the animal to be dangerous well that is how the animal will be but if it is brought up with love and care the animal will be sweet and loving and will not harm anyone just for their own entertainment. So there should be more laws placed on animal owners. If not their animal should be taken away because they are being treated poorly and are in possible danger and they could also be placing other people in danger.

Senior Project Progress

My senior project is the Language Development of Babies and Toddlers. I chose this topic because it interests me very much and I wanted to learn more about it. I also chose this topic because I believe it might help me later on in the future, because I want to become a social worker and work with families. I have printed out all the papers from the school website that are related to the senior project. I also had an alteration done to my project it was a little one and I had to go see Mr. Gilbert and talk to him about it. I originally for my end product I was going to create a game and a pamphlet but Mr. Gilbert approved and changed my end product so now I will focus on creating a game. I have also been trying to figure out where I am going to do my volunteer hours at either at head start or the preschool program at shear charter school. They both told me I would be able to do my volunteer hours there and all I needed is to take the tuberculosis shot because I was going to be working with kids and also maybe that I might have to be finger printed because of that same reason but that my mentor would double check on that. I also have my mentor and she works at the preschool and I am very fortunate that she agreed to be my mentor for my senior project and I am going to interview her this upcoming Monday at 2:45 in the afternoon. I have come up with many good questions to ask my mentor and now I am just working on which ones are the most important and then I am going to put them a logical order.

Final Discussion Response: Into The Wild

Many people either think that Chris McCandless was either mentally ill or suicidal. I don’t think he was either. McCandless I believe just wanted to get away from many people that he did not like to be around, get away from his town and all the same people. I also believe that he wanted to experience a new atmosphere somewhere else with new people in a new place. If McCandless was suicidal or mentally ill I think he would have ended his life in another manner not the way he did by going away to Alaska. If he wanted to commit suicide I think he could have done it another way and he would not have suffered because most people that want to commit suicide they don’t want to suffer because they want to die fast.  Suicidal people take the easy way out because they believe that all they have gone through is just a lot of pain and they don’t want to experience that in the way they take their own life away. McCandless did not take the easy road he wanted to go to Alaska he hitched hiked for a while and then soon after ended up in Alaska. McCandless sure did not take the supplies needed for the trip but it did not seem that he went to Alaska to die there because if so he would not have token any supplies. He thought he would have been able to live off the supplies he took and to be able to live off the land but he did not have any type of experience in preserving the meat of an animal to be able to eat it and also it seemed like he did not know many survival skills.
Not only a few people are unhappy with the way they live their lives but it is a handful but most of them don’t do anything about it. It is only just a few that actually do something about what makes them unhappy and they try to change it because they are tiered of the way things are. People that don’t do anything or at least try to change something is because they want to feel secure. If we try to change something now maybe tomorrow nothing will be the same and we will not know what to do because of just that one change, but that one change changes so many more things. Changing one thing does not only affect one person but many so I think that’s why many people are afraid to do something about it. Especially a person with a family they  have a hard time trying to figure out what they should do because they  want to go to sleep knowing that later on their kids will be able to have a great future. If you actually think about it if that one thing makes you unhappy won’t it make another person unhappy? Or even their kids? Those people may believe that if they try to change something others will judge them for what they are fighting for. Those people don’t do anything maybe just because they are to scared for what people may think of them so they sit there and wait for another person to stand up for the same thing and try to do something about it and maybe then they will join.

Nails

Nails are a way to make you look a bit more formal and elegant. Acrylic nails, wrap nails, duck feet nails, gel nails, press on nails and others are just some of the many types of nails that are used every day by women. There are also manicures and pedicures and both men and women can receive one. The price for getting any procedure of nails varies depending on the place and what type of nails you get done. Also on any nails that you get done can have diamonds sparkles and a few other accessories to make the nails look even prettier than they already are. Gel nails are more expensive than acrylic nails just because gel nails look better for a while longer because of the coat of gel applied to the top of the acrylic. to put on fake nails at a salon or at home you need acrylic powder(there is clear and also different colors and some even have sparkles) you also need nail primer which helps the adhesion of enchantments to the natural a nail and nail tips (there is clear, white and designed tips) the tips you can leave as is or you can get nail polish and paint them to your choice of color. Nails are also useful if you do not want to use nail tips. If you are going to use nail tips you will need nail adhesive to glue the nail tip to the natural nail. To apply the acrylic you will need a little dappen dish and acrylic monomer and an acrylic brush. The smell of the acrylic monomer is very strong that is why women that are pregnant are advised not to get their nails done because it might do some harm since the smell is very strong and it can harm a baby. Anyone can get their nails done because there is a range of inexpensive nails to expensive nails. if a nail tip is going to be used to form the nail you first put a drop of nail adhesive to the natural nail then put the nail tip and apply some pressure and then let it dry, then you dip the brush in the monomer and then place the brush on the acrylic powder and get a little ball and place it on the nail and spread it and repeat it again until there is a nice thick layer so the nail will be able to hold and till it looks nice. After the brush is not needed no more clean the brush y dipping it in the monomer and then swipe it on a towel tip all the acrylic powder seems to be gone. After the nail is dry you want to even it out using a nail file. Then if the nail is going to have gel you get the gel and brush on a layer so it can look nicer for a while longer. Yes gel nails look better for longer just because of the gel but acrylic nails also last for a while just a bit less than gel nails.

Fast Food Linked to Childhood Obesity

Fast Food Linked to Childhood Obesity
What came to my attention while reading this article was that eating fast food adds about 6lbs. per child annually. Kids as young as 4 are eating fast food. Fast food consumption skyrocketed around the 1970's and the people that consumed more fast food were the households with a high income. Fast food lovers tend to eat less fruits and vegetables. The weight gain has increased even more since the 1990's because more fast foods places have been built. What surprised me the most was that about 15 percent of young people in the United States and one third of adults are obese.

Introduction to Cosmetology

Everyone without even knowing it themselves they are always worried about their beauty and how they could improve their good looks. Cosmetology has many ways to improve a person’s beauty. It is all different for men and women but all the cosmetologists try to keep both men and women looking fabulous. Cosmetology consists of many things like perms, hair doo’s, hair coloring, haircuts, extensions and that is only part of what cosmetology does for people. There is also make-up like eye shadow designs also different ways to do eyeliner there is also many ways to apply all the products like lipstick, lip gloss, lip liner, bronzer, blush, concealer and cover up. Nails are always important and many women get their nails done whether it be a manicure, pedicure, acrylic nails, gel nails. All nails always need to look pretty whether it is with some kind of nail polish, diamonds pearls or other decorating pieces to make the nails look beautiful. In cosmetology there is also waxing of arms, legs and eyebrows. There is also two alternatives to just waxing your eyebrows there is the old fashion way of plucking there eyebrows which was around the 1930’s but now there is also an easier way to shaping your eyebrow it’s called eyebrow threading which originated in India and it is now practiced here in the United States. Also included in cosmetology are facials and massages. Cosmetology is an everyday thing for everyone.

Going for the look

Walking into a big nice or fancy store and just at the moment people look at you they start to judge you. From just a look of one person you know that they have started to judge you based on the way you look. Many retail stores take the incentive to hire pretty girls or handsome guys that fit their image. One retail store in particular is Abercrombie and Fitch seeks the attractive “all American look” which is blue eyes and blond hair. Also most of the time the retail stores look for people that fit into their close if they don’t fit they don’t fit in the store. This is good for the business as far as getting more clientele because people go in to the stores and see attractive people wearing the logo and they want to look like them so they buy it but at the same time it is bad because people that feel offended by the way they look at their employees or their customers they get sued. Hiring because of looks does cause a lot of problems because it lowers people’s self-esteem they get mad and it also raised the issue of discrimination and racism. The retail stores to not discriminate against race, age or gender because that is wrong and that would just cause more law suits no they find a way to justify everything they discriminate against your appearance the way you look dress and talk and that is not illegal according to them which should be because that is still discriminating against people by just hiring attractive people.  The retail stores that hire by looks run into a bunch of problems because people feel they are being discriminated against their gender, age, national origin, race or even disabilities. Looking into catalogs of any sort you always seem to find the people with the “all American look”, young and thin people that seem so fake at times but they are attractive and some people look up to them for a variety of reasons it is weird and rare to see a normal sized girl in a catalog that does not have the “all American look” some people decide not to sop at stores which advertise certain looks and only show one race in their catalogs. We should “never judge a book by its cover” because we do not know anything about their background where they have been or what hardships that have overcame just to make it that far so we should get to know the person before we start to judge them. Having a wider variety of employee in a store would open up the doors to many more customers per store because their race, gender or age would be represented in the store and they would not feel like an outcast inside the store while they are shopping. That would be such a relief for many people to just go in to shop without any worries of what the people inside the stores are going to think about what you are wearing, how old you are or your age. Stores should not hire only based on looks.

All About Me

Hello I am a senior at Napa High class of 2013 I am very excited to have made it this far to my senior year and knowing that I will graduate soon with all my friends that I have made while in high school or others that I have had since elementary school or middle school. I have a big family and I love them all. My parents are still together and have been for almost 26 years I admire them so much because they have cared for my older sister, younger brother and me. In 2008 my older sister got married and moved away with her husband, in 2009 she had her first son she was a proud mother and then a year later she had another son. I always love reuniting with my family because there is never a dull moment we are always talking about something or we get up and dance. I believe I have the most amazing family in the world. During winter break we usually go visit my parents’ hometowns in Michoacán, Mexico. We go there to visit our family and attend traditional parties and they are really fun. While we are there time flies by and the part I love the most of being in Mexico besides the great food is that while I am there I do not use my phone a lot like I usually do and I do not keep track of time because my clock in Mexico is the sun and that is fun because being here in Napa we always have to keep track of time and in my parents town it seems small but there is a lot of people and we are mostly related to each other in some way. I love to help people; in the future I plan on becoming a social worker to help kids because I believe if you help out children at a young age later in the future they will be more successful and if you teach a child right from wrong there will be less crime. I also want to build a shelter to have people spend the night if needed and also supply them with a meal. I will be happy if I just make a change in one person’s life. I would like to go live in Mexico for a while and visit a few states and explore the other types of culture there and try their food and also i would like to attend their parties to see the differences and similarities to my culture. I also want to go to Italy and go site seeing and shopping. I love shopping so I would like to go to Paris, New York or both if possible and just shop till I drop. I love the color purple and all similar colors I also love monkeys they are my favorite animal from the jungle. I believe that we may grow up and be sophisticated most of the time but at heart we are still kids and that will never change well at least for me.
